Contact

Layers

by Jane Hurd Cahane

In this impasse, we make our connections
- communicating cautiously
across barriers
as sensitive as sand to mind.

An embrace, a lie, a discordant note
Thrown into otherwise
harmonious encounters
- what to make of it?

We are so busy in our modern shuffle:
commuting, businessing,
dallying, dancing.
We have no time for straightness
right and clean as rooks
silhouetted against a sharp sky.

It is tentative and tedious
The work of breaking through so many layers,
- So in the end we maneouvre, manfully,
deliberating actions
as erstwhile as a kiss.
